FOREST CITY, Iowa -- Day three of RAGBRAI is the longest day of the week. Riders left from Emmetsburg Tuesday morning and headed the 80 miles to Forest City.

Riders had the option to make it a century ride with a 26 miles loop.

The tradition goes along with RAGBRAI and is a bucket list item for some riders.

For others, completing the loop is a family tradition. Bret Pilney Jr. says it all started with his grandfather who biked 150 miles as part of the state's 150th birthday. His dad tied that record the next year and now Pilney wants to one-up the men in his family.

“Today I’m out here doing the century loop twice and trying  to get and add on another 20 miles trying to get his record so I’m going to try to get it to 165 or 155 miles,” says Pilney.

Hills, heat, and endurance made day three one to remember and for some landed them a new family record.

Riders who completed the century loop put in 105 miles. They also get a patch to show off their accomplishment.
