Des Moines’ Market District Ripe for Development

DES MOINES, Iowa — A new district in downtown Des Moines is under development.  While Western Gateway is known for the Sculpture Garden and its corporate campuses and the East Village is home to retail and restaurants, the Market District is working to find its own identity.

“You’ll start to see it develop from the fringes, from the MLK and Court Avenue side and start to fill in slowly over time,” says Des Moines Assistant City Manager Matt Anderson.

The Market District is a square of land south of Court Avenue.  It sits between the Capitol grounds on the east and the Des Moines River to the west.

Wednesday, Scotty’s Body Shop broke ground on its new location in the area.  The family business is moving from the Western Gateway area to the corner of SE 6th and MLK.   The new Scotty’s should be ready for business at the beginning of January.

“We wanted to stay downtown because all of our customers have been located near downtown area,” says owner Scott Buchanan.

The city-owned land is zoned for industrial use.  Des Moines’ Public Works Department is headquartered in the area.  Anderson says eventually the city will move the department to make room for new development.
