Residents of Newton have been talking about this for a long time. Now it is becoming reality. Last week old playground equipment was removed, this week the new equipment is being installed in Maytag Park.
The Newton Park Board approved and the City Council said okay to spending $92,000 dollars on the project. Nathan Unsworth serves as the Newton Administrative Parks Supt. He put out a request for volunteers on the city’s website. The request asks for volunteers to work in teams of 8-10 people, three shifts a day Wednesday to Friday. Fifty volunteers are needed on Saturday, that day volunteers under 16 are encouraged to participate that day.
“It will be exciting to see community members come together to work on this project,” said Nathan Unsworth, in a news release from the city. “I think people will be proud to say ‘I helped build that’,” said Unsworth.
Dana Simbro of Newton hired a baby sitter to watch her kids so she could help. “They’re gonna have a great place to play,” she said. “I have a 5 year old, and a seven year old, and they’re gonna be out here Monday morning,” she added.
