DES MOINES, Iowa – This weekend, Iowa’s best Italian food and culture are together in one spot.
The fourth annual Italian American Heritage Festival of Iowa kicked off this morning at Western Gateway Park in downtown Des Moines. Groups from all over the state come together to show off true Italian culture right here in Iowa.
The festival is growing – this was the first time vendors say their stands took up the entire section of Locust Street that was blocked off for the fair.
“We have lots of culture, bocci ball, lots of kids areas that’s free for the kids,” said Lisa Cruchelow, president of the Society of Italian American Auxiliary. “Just a great opportunity for the Italian community to show our culture.”
The festival costs $5 after 5 p.m. both Friday and Saturday night, but all proceeds will be donated to the Greater Iowa chapter of the Junior Diabetes Research Fund.
