MUSCATINE, Iowa — A Muscatine teacher who invented a device to protect his classroom from armed intruders is taking his product nationwide.
Daniel Nietzel is a shop teacher in Muscatine. He created a product called “The Sleeve.”
The welded steel device slips over the arm on the inside of a door, making it nearly impossible for an intruder to open it from the outside.
In the seven months since creating the first one in his basement he’s now sold them to 22 states. It’s not just schools buying them. Hospitals, military facilities, and corporate offices are also buying.
WQAD reports the business has gotten so big he’s stepping away from teaching for now to focus on it.
“We’re to the point where I’m taking a sabbatical from teaching so that someone can be here fulltime during the school year to receive the orders, make sure they’re getting out,” says Nietzel.
Nietzel says he hates leaving his students behind. But he knows this new venture can help save the lives of countless other students around the country.
