DES MOINES, Iowa — When Drake University students return to classes next month, they could find the campus’s most well-known bar closed for business.

Monday night, the Des Moines city council voted to deny the liquor license application from Peggy’s Tavern on Forest Avenue.

The longtime Drake neighborhood bar has failed five of its thirteen compliance checks since 2009. Its current owner, Mark Graziano, is also under federal indictment for hoarding painkillers.

Graziano can appeal the Peggy’s decision to the Iowa Alcoholic Beverages Commission.
