DES MOINES, Iowa — Des Moines police are hoping the public can help them identify the body of a man found in the Des Moines River Sunday afternoon.

The body was discovered by a boater in the area south of SE 36th Street and Vandalia Road. Because the body was tangled in some debris, police could not reach it. The Des Moines Fire Department Water Emergency Team launched a boat and was able to recover the body.

The body is that of a black male in his 20s. He was about five-foot-eight with a medium build. He had short black hair and facial stubble. Police say he was wearing a dark swimsuit.

Initially officials thought the man appeared to be white, but they say that was because he had been in the river for around two weeks.

Nothing in the autopsy suggested foul play.

If you have any information on the identity of the body, you’re asked to contact Des Moines police at 515-283-4869.
