WEST DES MOINES, Iowa –It's been more than a year since one family got a life-changing diagnosis. While their daughter is still fighting the disease, the parents are helping others going through a similar journey.
Tricia Gonyo says, "Ashley was diagnosed with B cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia on February 20th of 2013." The mother of two goes on to say, "Our life has changed so dramatically, and it's just part of our life now."
Shortly after Ashley was diagnosed, friends hosted the “Have a Heart 5k.” The event raised $10,000 to help with the family’s medical bills.
Next month the Gonyos will pay it forward by hosting the 2nd “Have a Heart 5k.” This time money will go to three charities that help kids going through cancer: Kids Living Brave, Children’s Cancer Connection, and the Child Life Program at Blank Children’s Hospital.
Gonyo says, "Continue to build on what they've already done and pay back, or pay forward to some of the organizations that are so amazing to our community, and so instrumental in helping families in this area that are getting treated for some sort of childhood cancer."
The goal is to raise $10,000 again. The family friendly run/walk is Sunday, August 17th at 8 a.m. at Raccoon River Park in West Des Moines. Registration costs $25 for adults. The event also includes a free fun run for kids, along with other activities. The top 4 finishers will receive a cash prize. Click here for more information and to register.
