DES MOINES, Iowa -- A retired Des Moines police officer is taking over the reins of the Latino Heritage Festival.

Lt. Joe Gonzalez will take over the job later this summer.

Gonzalez was severely injured last year when a truck backed into him at the World Food Prize building. He retired from the police department earlier this year.

During his time with the department he became known for his work to bridge the gap between police and the Spanish-speaking community.
