MADISON, Wisconsin — The jury has begun its deliberations into whether a woman kidnapped her newborn nephew in Wisconsin and left him outside an Iowa gas station.

Kristen Smith was arrested in West Branch on February 6 after officials say she took her four-day-old nephew from his mother’s home in Beloit, Wisconsin. The baby wasn’t found until the following day, near where Smith was taken into custody.

The baby was found in good condition, despite having been in a plastic tote outside in subzero temperatures.

Prosecutors say Smith faked a pregnancy online and even had a prosthetic belly.

If found guilty, she faces 25 years to life in prison. An Iowa child endangerment charge was dropped to expedite the federal case, WMTV reports.
