POLK COUNTY, Iowa — The Polk County Sheriff’s Office is warning people about a familiar scam that is now targeting businesses.

It starts with a caller who claims to be with the local electric company and threatens to turn off the electricity unless the bill is paid. The scam artist encourages payment with a pre-paid credit card.

In one case, officials say the caller even knew the exact amount of the business’ last bill.

Authorities say to be on alert for these types of callers and to report them immediately.
