FORT MADISON, Iowa — A Fort Madison police officer is on paid leave after state investigators say he shot and killed an armed man.
On Sunday, police took a report of a man slashing tires on parked cars with a knife. They identified him as Ryan Swearingen, 27.
Investigators say Swearingen took off as officers approached him running inside a house. They say when officers went into the home, Swearingen came out of a closet, holding a knife.
One of the officers shot at him. He was pronounced dead at the home.
The Division of Criminal Investigation is leading the investigation into the shooting.
The state medical examiner in Ankeny will conduct an autopsy.
The name of the officer involved is not being release at this time.
