DES MOINES, Iowa – U.S. Senator Tom Harkin (D) was in Des Moines Monday to see projects he helped secure funding to build.
The retiring senator made stops at the DART Central Station, the Birdland and Central Place levees, the Southeast Connector and the Principal Riverwalk.
Harkin said in the past 30 years his office has helped ear-mark more than $320 million for a total of 127 projects in Des Moines. The Senator also said city leaders worked hard to help get it. “What I want people to know is that it takes all levels of government to make a city like Des Moines livable, profitable. That's local government, state government and federal government.”
Harkin will hop on his bike Tuesday morning for a trip on the High Trestle Trail. The federal government chipped in more than $5 million for that project.
