weehler_smith_drewDES MOINES, Iowa — The trial for a 17-year-old accused of killing his four-month-old son has been continued.

Court documents showed Drew Weehler-Smith’s first degree murder trial was expected to start Monday. A new date hasn’t been announced.

Weehler-Smith also faces a charge of neglect of a dependent person.

Police say Weehler-Smith was watching Gabriel McFarland in April when Gabriel’s mother found him alone and unresponsive.

He died at the hospital.

A medical examiner said he died from abusive head trauma.

Earlier this month he was arrested again for violating his pre-trial terms by drinking alcohol and breaking curfew.
