WAUKEE,Iowa – On Monday, the Waukee city council approved plans for a large residential development along Alice’s road.
City leaders say the 430 unit apartment, 3-2. They say the complex is essential to the city’s growing population. The complex, Autumn Ridge, will be made up of a dozen, two and three-story buildings. Before developers break ground on the apartment complex, they plan to connect the existing residential road, SE Olson Drive, to Alice’s Road for better access.
Several apartments, condos and homes are located near the approved site. Two council members voted against the plan for that reason. Councilwoman Shelley Hughes says, “I am not comfortable with the concentration population in the area, however this plan was well thought out by the city.”
Many neighbors who live near the site say they are not happy with the council’s decision. Cindy Zielke says the complex will increase traffic flow and cause home depreciation because of the saturation of apartments.
“Why should I put in a nicer deck? Why should I upgrade my home and make it more personalized if I’m going to have apartments and it’s just going to keep my home value either the same or less?” says Zielke.
There is no timetable on when the project could start but developers say the project will be completed in phases over the course of five years.
