DES MOINES, Iowa — A Des Moines police officer is out of the hospital and recovering after she was pinned between her squad car and a suspect’s car.

It happened early Monday morning in the parking lot at the Cozy Rest Motel. Police say two officers were on patrol when they saw a man and two women in the parking lot on Southeast 14th Street.

The officers ran the man’s license plate, and found the car was reported stolen out of Minnesota.

Police say the suspect, 34-year-old Leroy Bradley, brought prostitutes from Minnesota to Iowa.  When officers tried to get him out of the car, they say he tried to get away.

“Several times the suspect tries to place the car in gear and drive away. Officer Herman is able to put it back in park however at some point he was able to get in gear and hits the gas,” Des Moines Police Sgt. Jason Halifax said.

Officer Dusty Rains became pinned between the cars and that’s when she and the other officer, Shawn Herman, fired at the suspect. One of the bullets hit him in the head, but he still managed to get away. He eventually surrendered to police at a nearby convenience store.

The owner of the Cozy Rest Motel says Bradley was not a guest at the hotel.

Bradley has been released from the hospital, and now he’s in the Polk County Jail. He faces charges including theft, eluding, assault, and pandering.

I’m glad to hear that the injuries to officer Rains were minor enough to warrant her release from the hospital after so short a time.

On the other hand, it’s a shame that the knuckle dragging sleaze ball that caused her injuries survived.
