DES MOINES, Iowa — Police are investigating an officer-involved shooting that started after an officer was pinned by the suspect’s car.
Officers Dusty Rains and Shawn Herman stopped to investigate some suspicious activity at about 1:20 a.m. in the parking lot of the Cozy Rest Motel at 2316 SE 14th Street.
Police say Leroy Bradley, 34, from Minnesota is accused of bringing prostitutes from out-of-state to Des Moines in a stolen car. When they stopped to question him in the parking lot, he wouldn't get out of the car.
"Several times the suspect tries to place the car in gear and drive away. Officer Herman is able to put it back in park however at some point he was able to get in gear and hits the gas," Des Moines Police Sgt. Jason Halifax said.
When Bradley took off, he pinned Rains between her squad car and his. At that time, both she and Officer Herman fired at Bradley hitting him in the head.
Following a brief car chase, officers arrested him at the Kum & Go on SE 14th and Park.
"The driver pulls in, stops and gets out of the car and surrenders," said Halifax.
Officer Rains, a two-year veteran with the department is expected to make a full recovery. She doesn't have any broken bones or major injuries and was able to walk away from the incident.
Bradley is in stable condition. After he's released from the hospital, police say he will be charged with two counts of assault, eluding, and pandering.
The department is reviewing Monday morning's shooting, but at this point, they say it appears to be justified.
