DES MOINES, Iowa -- Emergency crews rescued a man from the Des Moines River in downtown Des Moines Wednesday afternoon.
A witness spotted the man near the Center Street Dam at about 12:10 p.m. When crews arrived, the man was in the river swimming and floating around naked. Rescue crews threw in a rope and ordered him to grab on. He originally ignored commands, but authorities say as he began to get tired, he chose to cooperate.
After grabbing on to a rope, a rescue boat arrived and he was pulled aboard. The man was taken to a hospital conscious and alert.
It's unclear how the man got in the river, or what his intentions were. Investigators will also try and determine whether the man was under the influence of drugs and alcohol.
