DES MOINES, Iowa-- A Creston couple will be inducted into the Iowa 4-H Hall of Fame at the State Fair. Verna Bailey and her late husband, Paul, served as longtime 4-H leaders in Union County.

This year, one of the H’s almost kept Bailey from attending the Iowa State Fair. After surviving lymphoma nine years ago, her health took a turn for the worse.

“You go day by day. So I'm going day by day, coming to the state fair,” says Verna Bailey.

“It’s really special this year because I don't think she thought she would make it,” says daughter Chris Bailey.

The 84-year-old is in hospice care. Thanks to her family and nurse from HCI Care Services, Bailey is able to enjoy one more state fair at her favorite spot.

“We love to camp,” says Verna Bailey.

The Bailey family camps in the same spot year after year. They have a camper now, but nearly 60 years ago, things were a lot different.

“We camped in a truck with bales of hay and a tarp over the truck and slept in it. That's how I started out,” explains Bailey.

When they make it down to the fairgrounds, the great-grandmother enjoys watching her family show livestock for 4-H.

Bailey will be honored at a 4-H ceremony on the last day of the fair.
