WEST DES MOINES, Iowa – One person was killed and another injured after an accident on Interstate 80 Wednesday morning.
Authorities were called to the crash on the east bound lanes between the Jordan Creek Parkway and 60th Street exits in West Des Moines shortly after 8:40 a.m.
Police say the vehicle came off the road and traveled along the medium, missing the cable barriers and drove head-on into an abutment of the pedestrian bridge near 60th Street.
Investigators don’t think any other vehicles were involved in the crash.
The driver was killed. A passenger was taken to a Des Moines hospital in a serious condition.
Officers talked to a person who saw the driver right before the crash.
“We spoke with one witness that described the driver leaving the area, the rest area just west of here, maybe thought he had some kind of condition, either tired, medical, don’t know, and we think even witnessed the crash,” Sgt. Ken O’Brien with the West Des Moines Police Department said.
Drivers were directed to the shoulder as emergency crews worked on the scene.
An autopsy will be performed on the driver, whose identity is being withheld until family notification.
The accident remains under investigation.
