DES MOINES, Iowa - An unusually cool summer means an unusually low number of patrons for the Des Moines public pools.

"Pool season, we only have a certain window, and Mother Nature wasn't exactly cooperative this year," said Jen Fletcher, Marketing Supervisor for the Des Moines Parks & Recreation Department. "So we're a little disappointed in our numbers, but that's the risk you take when you run an outdoor venue."

Pools opened Memorial Day weekend and will close August 17th for the season. While Fletcher says the department doesn't have hard numbers just yet, early projections estimate around 12,000 less pool patrons this year compared to last.

Fletcher adds with most public schools starting back up this week, combined with the Iowa State Fair, there won't likely be a crowd at any of the public pools through closing in several days.
