New Eastside School Is Ready To Open Its Doors

DES MOINES, Iowa – It’s not every day a new school opens its doors however on Monday Grandview Christian School will do just that.

The new school is in the old Norwoodville Elementary building on the east side of Des Moines. The elementary school was a part of the Saydel School District but closed because of enrollment issues in 2012.

Those same issues are the reason Grandview Park School, which was associated with Grandview Park Baptist Church, closed after this school year.

“So if you put that into perspective we have really given a facelift to a school that has been sitting empty for two years, in less than two months and now we`re ready to start school,” says superintendent Mark Weatherly.

Weatherly says getting the school accredited and juggling finances were the biggest challenges during the launch but he credits both the faith–based community and the neighborhood support for the school’s early success.

“We have seen the faith community come together and unify behind this effort to a degree that it’s been it has been a great thing to watch.”

Close to 270 pre–kindergarten through 12th grade students are enrolled at Grandview Christian School.
