DES MOINES, Iowa — This year parents of students in Des Moines Public Schools have a new place to go for information.
The district says it launched its new smart phone app Monday. Parents can subscribe to their child’s school and see news updates, announcements, access lunch menus, download activities calendars, and find out about snow days.
It cost the district $18,500 to hire a company to develop the app. You can download it and try it out before school starts, which is this Wednesday.
“A lot of people just can’t afford to necessarily have a computer at home or to have internet connection, well that’s changed in the past few years in terms of the accessibility of smart phones being really close to universal. And this is the way to access people, the computer that we carry around in our pocket,” says spokesman Phil Roeder.
The app is available for Apple and Android phones for free. Just search “Des Moines Public Schools” in your device’s app store.
