One Person Killed in Rollover Crash on I-80

POWESHIEK, Iowa – One person was killed and a second person was injured following a rollover crash along Interstate 80.

According to the Iowa State Patrol the crash happened shortly before 12:30 p.m. Wednesday in the westbound lanes of I-80 near mile marker 193.

A car driven by Charlene Gibbens, 59, of Des Moines, was driving a westbound car when she lost control. The car traveled into a ditch and rolled.

Gibbens, who was not wearing a seatbelt at the time, was ejected from the car. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

A passenger, Christy Thomas, 33, of Des Moines, was taken to Grinnel Hospital and treated for non-life threatening injuries.

An investigation into the crash continues.
