Police Say Marshalltown Child Killed by Mother’s Boyfriend

MARSHALLTOWN, Iowa — A Marshalltown man has been charged with murder in the death of his girlfriend’s three-year-old daughter.

The Marshalltown Police Department says 28-year-old Branden Collins faces charges of first degree murder and child endangerment causing death. They say three-year-old Jossilyn Starn suffered head injuries Wednesday while Collins was caring for her and two other children.

An ambulance was called to 907 S. 11th Avenue on an unresponsive child at 1:49 p.m. Wednesday Starn was taken to the Marshalltown Medical & Surgical Center and then transferred by air ambulance to Blank Children’s Hospital in Des Moines.

Investigators interviewed Collins Thursday and he was arrested and charged with child endangerment along with possession of marijuana and drug paraphernalia.

Jossilyn Starn died from her injuries Friday afternoon and the charges against Collins were upgraded.

Collins is being held in the Marshall County Jail on a bond of $50,000 and is scheduled to make his initial court appearance on the new charges Saturday.
