CLEVELAND, Ohio – Another former Iowa State football player gone too soon. Authorities in Cleveland, Ohio, confirm they found the body of Hiawatha Rutland in Lake Erie.
Rutland was visiting Whiskey Island in Cleveland from New York. Rutland was last seen trying to swim to shore from a private boat Sunday night at about 7:30 p.m.
The Coast Guard used air and boat crews to search for Rutland. They found his body Monday afternoon.
Rutland played at Iowa State from 2000 to 2003. He racked up more than 1,000 yards from scrimmage, and nine touchdowns before a knee injury cut his career short.
Rutland had worked as a school teacher in New York. Rutland is at least the eighth known Cyclone from the Dan McCarney era to have his life cut short. McCarney previously told us all the deaths steal his breath away.
