DES MOINES, Iowa — The neighbors around Evelyn Davis Park in Des Moines have been working to change its image from one of violence to one of community.
Creative Visions was in the community Tuesday night, raising awareness for its “Stop the Violence, Keep the Peace Sleep Out.”
Organizers say they want to address the real cause of violence, and to do that they need to bond as a community. Creative Visions is hoping to change not only the present, but also the future.
“We don’t want cosmetic change, we want systemic change. And to have systemic change that means you have to plan long term, and that’s what we’re doing. The babies that are here, the young people that are here, this is for their future. It’s for their children. Because their children shouldn’t have to go through what even they’re going through now,” says Ako Abdu Samad, director of Creative Visions.
The “Stop the Violence, Keep the Peace Sleep Out” is Friday September 12th in Evelyn Davis park. It begins at 6:00 p.m. and everyone is welcome to attend. This is the second sleep out in just two months.
