Investigation Reveals Attorneys Overbilled State More Than $300,000

DES MOINES, Iowa – A special investigation by the State Auditor found that more than $300,000 was paid by the State Public Defender’s office to attorneys who overbilled for their services.

The report said that $311,182 was paid to 13 attorneys. According to the auditor, $45,582 was paid to attorneys who individually claimed more than 24 hours of service in a single day. More than $41,000 was paid for mileage improperly claimed by the attorneys.

The Department of Public Safety said the findings are under investigation.
