The Environmental Defense Fund (EDF) plans to eliminate fertilizer pollution as an environmental concern. It says it intends to engage farmers and businesses throughout the supply chain to transform how fertilizer-dependent grain crops are grown.
The near term goal of this Sustainable Sourcing Initiative is to maximize fertilizer efficiency on half of U.S. corn crops by 2020. EDF says that will cut 25 million metric tons of greenhouse gas emissions and improve water quality.
Director of the initiative, Suzy Friedman says the long-term goal is to make the U.S. grain supply sustainable and good for farmers, climate, and waterways.
EDF calls fertilizer the engine of agriculture but says inefficient us is one of the biggest threats to stable climate and clean water.
