WEST DES MOINES, Iowa- West Des Moines chocolate retailer Chocolate Storybook has participated in Cyber Monday now for three years, and so far results have been great. The store blasts out an email on Thanksgiving night to catch the Black Friday, Small Business Saturday, and Cyber Monday shoppers. For Chocolate Storybook, the clear winner is Cyber Monday.
"We had a local company place an order for 25 chocolate gift bundles and it was over $2500," Said Steve Shearer, owner of the Chocolate Storybook. "The most amazing thing is we never talked to each other." He said his corporate customer
went to their website, placed the order, and got a 15% Cyber-Monday discount.
Shearer said the business has changed from when he first purchased it 13 years ago. " You had to call people up and make a sales presentation," said Shearer. "The website we have is our sales person, and it's doing a great job here on Cyber Monday."
The concept of targeted day shopping like Black Friday or Cyber Monday is changing according to Brian Mennecke, Associate Professor of Business at Iowa State University. "I tend to think of it as Cyber November," said Mennecke. "There's a lot more content that comes in terms of advertising and incentives to get you to buy well before the Black Friday event. and certainly before the cyber Monday event."
Mennecke says the retailers want to engage with customers both online, and in store. "There's this concept that's referred to as Omni-Channel," said Mennecke. "The idea is that a retailer can reach out to customers in multiple ways." That would include mobile devices, using Twitter or other social media.
