MARSHALLTOWN, Iowa -- Marshalltown Police have released the name of a man killed in a shootout with officers early Wednesday morning.

Twenty-five-year-old Andrew Worsfold died after exchanging gunfire with Officer Ramon Maxey, 49, and Officer Benjamin Scheevel, 23.

Shortly before 4:00 a.m., police say the officers were on patrol near the Jiffy Gas Station on 3rd and Linn Avenue. Police say the gas station had been robbed Tuesday night and they were paying special attention to the area.

Officers began questioning Worsfold, but wouldn’t say if he was a suspect in the robbery case. After a brief confrontation, police say he pulled a handgun and exchanged gun fire with the officers. It’s not yet clear who fired first.

Worsfold was hit and taken to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead shortly after. The officers weren’t injured.

The Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation is looking into the incident. The patrol car driven by the officers had a dash cam but police say it wasn’t working. Marshalltown officers do not wear body cams.

“My obligation to this community is that this is fully investigated and no stone is left unturned. That’s exactly what we’re going to do. With that said, I don’t have any information that leads me to believe the officers acted improperly,” said Marshalltown Police Chief Michael Tupper.

Officers Maxey and Scheevel have been placed on paid administrative leave, which is department police for an officer-involved shooting, while the investigation continues.

I hope that the DCI can do an impeccably thorough job investigating this. I think it would be best for all concerned if their conclusions were above reproach. Especially considering the non-working camera: Even if it wouldn’t have shown anything useful, the fact that it was not working needs to be explained.

Leave it up to Brilbeck to troll in on another reporters story and just because law enforcement was involved. I think Brilbeck is a cop hater.
