DES MOINES, Iowa – It’s where some of the most-famous comedians got their start, and now, a freshman class of comics hoping to follow in the footsteps of Stephen Colbert and Tina Fey are bringing ‘The Best of Second City’ comedy club to Des Moines.
The comedy troupe is performing some of the club’s most iconic and famous sketches and improvisations at the Temple Theater in Des Moines this week. One of the group’s comedians, Nick Rees, is originally from Sioux City, and says while he loves implementing Iowa jokes to an Iowa crowd, he has to be careful.
“When I’m on stage, is people might not realize I’m from Iowa,” he said. “So when I make a reference that is true, and maybe a little cutting, if people don’t know you’re from here, it doesn’t go over so well. So you have to temper what you’re saying a little.”
Rees says the group enjoys finding local brands and locations the audience will recognize to implement in their acts for each city they visit. And while improvisation can be a fun type of comedy to perform, he says it’s always up in the air if the audience – or fellow comedians – will follow it.
“It’s definitely an adrenaline rush,” he said. “But that’s part of the magic of improv.”
