WEST DES MOINES, IA - Among the 28 students signing their National Letter of Intent at Valley High School one name, and school stood out. Denkinger, and St. Louis.
"St. Louis published an article on that and there was a couple comments about my last name being in St. Louis," Drew Denkinger said, future Saint Louis Billiken pitcher.
Drew's great-uncle, Don, infamously missed a call in game 6 of the 1985 World Series, "Being in Kansas City it was a very joyful event, the fact that the Royals won," Mark Denkinger said recalling the game, "we didn't know until after the game when we couldn't get down into the locker room to see my uncle that the call was improper."
It's a call that still haunts Cardinals fans. Mark hopes his son gets a warmer welcome than he did the last time he passed through Cardinal country with a target on his back. "It was an interesting time. I was actually at the University of Iowa playing baseball and we took a spring trip down to the University of Missouri and we had to put coats on to cover up our name on the back of our jersey's because we were getting yelled at by the fans."
The irony isn't lost on Drew, but this day isn't about what happened in the past. It's about his future. A future playing the game he loves. "When I took a visit I kind of fell in love with the coaches and the school. I think it's a perfect fit for me and a great baseball town."
