DES MOINES, Iowa - As spring kicks off Friday, volunteers are putting the finishing touches on a new outdoor garden at the Greater Des Moines Botanical Gardens.
The 7-acre plot of land features a conifer garden, water garden, events lawn, and overlook onto the Des Moines River. Most of the development is completed, but with further donations, the center hopes to finish out the remaining property in future years with even more themed gardens. Organizers say, in just two weeks when the gardens officially open, the development will look much brighter than it does now.
"Just like your home garden, we're doing a lot of cleanup and getting ready for spring," said Eldree Baer, Marketing and Outreach Director for the center. "We've got volunteers here working on our gardens, but everything is starting to bloom. We do also have 100,000 bulbs that we planted in the fall, so the colors will be pretty amazing this spring. So that'll be something we're all looking forward to, and we're just starting to see things pop up."
The outdoor garden will be open to the public on April 4.
