WEST DES MOINES, Iowa — Hy-Vee says it is replacing its annual triathlon with kids’ triathlons and 5K family runs in five Midwest communities.

Races will be held this summer in Des Moines, Kansas City, Minneapolis, Omaha, and the Quad Cities.

Kids who want to participate in the triathlons will raise money for the “Pinky Swear Foundation.”

The national organization supports children with cancer and their families by helping provide basic needs like rent and transportation. The foundation started in 2003 when a Minnesota family lost 9-year-old Mitch to cancer.

Before his death he made his parents pinky swear to keep helping families.

“Pinky swear, that’s what we are about. Keeping a promise to help families that need help. Now you’re all part of that,” says Becky Chepokas, Founder of the Pinky Swear Foundation.
