WAUKEE, Iowa – A Waukee middle school student was hit by a car before school Friday morning.
Just before 8 a.m. Friday, Waukee officers and EMS responded to a car-pedestrian accident on Ashworth Drive, north of the Waukee Middle School.
Witnesses told investigating officers that the pedestrian ran into traffic and into the path of moving vehicles.
Officers said there is not a posted crosswalk in that area of Ashworth Drive.
There were no major injuries and the student was released to their parents.
After declining transport by Waukee EMS, the parents did take their child to the hospital.
Last month another Waukee Middle School student was struck by a car.In that case, Witnesses told police the girl ran out from between two parked buses and the driver of an on-coming car didn’t have time to hit the break.
Police say that Friday’s incident happened in a different location than the incident in April.
At the beginning of this school year Waukee school and city officials enacted new traffic laws and safety features.
In August 2013, Kate Dressel, a student at Waukee’s South Middle School, was struck by a vehicle on her walk home from school. She sustained a head injury, causing her to miss months of the school year.
In a statement sent to parents Friday, Waukee school officials encouraged them to discuss procedures for crossing safely with their children.
