HAMPTON, Iowa -- The former Franklin County Jail is for sale. The facility was last used in 1988.
The asking price is $49,900.
Abbott Realty Broker, Kathy Stanbrough said that she has been able to show the property to various people.
"There are numerous things this property could be used for, it's within walking distance of downtown Hampton," said Stanbrough. "There's been all kinds of ideas, from a youth center, a family dwelling, people have thought about using it for retail, even had people talk about doing a barbecue pit."
The property is zoned for commercial or residential use, or it could be a multi-family dwelling. It is located right along Highway 3 in Hampton just east of the Franklin County Courthouse a block.
The property was built in 1880 for a cost of $10,000. The building, bricks and wood, cost $6,000, while the jail cage cost $4,000.
No inmates are currently housed anywhere in Hampton, they are sent to Butler County or Hardin County.
Stanbrough said if she could choose how to use the property, she said it would make a good office on the first floor, and living quarters upstairs.
There are no keys to the jail cells, but the doors are open.
