DES MOINES, Iowa -- Police are asking for the public’s help in identifying the person who burglarized a church in Ankeny.
The burglar caused several thousand dollars worth of damage. Police don’t know how much money the burglar got away with. Security cameras captured the burglar in action at Our Lady`s Immaculate Heart Catholic Church in Ankeny early Monday morning.
Father Steve Orr showed Channel 13’s cameras the path the burglar took after breaking in through one of the church's classroom windows. Fortunately, the burglar was not interested in desecrating the church, but he was looking for money.
Father Orr told Channel 13 News that the burglar, “Opened a lot of doors and drawers in a number of our offices, looking to see if anybody kept any money around, particularly mine.”
The burglar caused major damage to a safe, which will have to be replaced. When asked what message he would send to the burglar, Father Steve Orr replied, “If anybody`s desperate enough that they need help, that`s what we`re here for. You know, we help lots of people all the time. You know they don`t have to go to that kind of desperate moves to get some kind of help. We just need to know who they are and what help we can give them.”
Father Orr says he's disappointed for parishioners that their church was violated in this way, but did point out something to be thankful for, saying, “Gratefully, no one was hurt. No one was in the building at the time, and so you know that`s, those kinds of things are the blessing of it all. The rest of it can all be taken care of. That`s just material stuff.”
