DES MOINES, Iowa - The Riverfront YMCA is no more. An implosion Sunday morning brought down the 58 year old building in just a matter of seconds.
The implosion had been scheduled to happen at about 7:14 a.m. but crews set off the blast about 15 minutes early.
Hundreds of people gathered around the Des Moines Riverfront early Sunday morning to watch the implosion in person. An exclusion zone had been set up around the site that required several downtown streets and bridges to be closed.
As crowds dispersed from the scene, several people expressed their disappointment at missing the implosion when the blast was set off more than 10 minutes ahead of schedule. Officials have not said why the decision was made to implode the building early.
