DES MOINES, Iowa -- A Des Moines teenager charged with killing his grandmother made his first court appearance Monday.

Police responded to a home in the 3900 block of East 30th Street on Saturday night for a report of an assault. When officers got there, they found the body of 79-year-old Rachel Pray.

Soon after, officers arrested Pray’s grandson 17-year-old Noah Laprei.

Court documents say he made an unprovoked statement to police admitting to beating his grandma.

Neighbors say Laprei was acting erratically earlier that night and may have been on drugs.  Investigators say they are waiting on the results of an autopsy for the official cause of death.

A preliminary hearing for the case is scheduled for October 22nd at 8 a.m. Laprei is being held on a $500,000 bond.
