ANKENY, Iowa -- A public hearing is being held Tuesday about a proposal to improve I-35 in Ankeny.

The Iowa Department of Transportation wants to widen I-35 over a four-mile stretch between NE 36th Street and Oralabor Road. The plan also calls for improvements to East First Street between Delaware Ave. and Frisk Drive.

The DOT says the goal of the plan is to provide efficient and safe access to I-35 from Ankeny’s adjacent arterial roads.

The plan would affect Heritage Park and require the DOT to acquire a permanent easement for a small portion, about .065 of an acre, of the park. The DOT says the easement would have a minimal impact on the park. The plan also includes the construction of a bike trail on the south and east boundary of the park that would provide a safe crossing of I-35 for pedestrians and cyclists.

If you would like to attend the public hearing a formal presentation on the project will be made at 5:30 p.m., followed by a question and answer session. It’s being held at the Best Western Metro North, 133 SE Delaware Ave. in Ankeny.
