DES MOINES, Iowa -- December 15, 2015, is the last day to enroll or change plans for new health insurance coverage to start January 1, 2016.
This deadline is important because most people want their new policy to start on January 1. During last year’s open enrollment, the marketplace saw the biggest surge of sign-ups in the days before the deadline.
Since open enrollment began on November 1, 2015, over 2.8 million people have already signed up for a plan at HealthCare.gov.
According to HealthCare.gov, eight out of 10 people who enroll in health coverage through the site qualify for financial help to make their monthly premiums lower.
If people choose not to have health insurance in 2016, they are at risk of paying a fee. The fee for not having health insurance in 2016 is $695 per adult, $347.50 per child under 18 or 2.5 percent of your annual household income, whichever is higher.
