MASON CITY, Iowa — A portion of Highway 18 near Mason City was closed for eight hours after a truck caught fire and a crane crashed on the road Wednesday afternoon.

Iowa State Patrol Sgt. Nathan Ludwig said a truck driver hauling candy bars smelled something burning when he was on the highway around noon. He pulled over and noticed some of his tires had caught fire.

Firefighters arrived on scene and were able to put out the fire with no injuries, Charred candy bars littered the side of the highway.

Officials called in a crane to tow the trailer. Due to the heavy load, the crane tipped over and crashed across a stretch of the highway.

Ludwig said the area was closed until about 8 p.m., as additional crews were called in to clean up the mess.
