DES MOINES, Iowa -- Iowa’s capital city successfully hosted its first NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament. City leaders are now working on landing another NCAA bid.

Des Moines is eligible to host another men’s basketball tournament at Wells Fargo Arena in 2019.

Several major construction projects are set to be complete by then, and city leaders are hoping that makes a difference.

Three hotels are set to open by then, which are the Staybridge Suites, AC Hotel and the Iowa Events Center Convention Hotel. The hotels will provide more than 500 additional rooms including more retail space and residential living.

The skywalk, currently under construction, will also be completed and help connect everything together.

“Just like when the caucuses come every four years, those visitors that come back every four years get to come back and see a new Des Moines. And that will be the same if we’re able to land an NCAA tournament,” said Des Moines City Councilman Matt Anderson.

City leaders are also working on bringing more non-sport events to Des Moines. The city is currently bidding to host the NAACP Convention.
