DES MOINES, Iowa -- Freedom For Youth Ministries, a statewide youth center program for homeless and at-risk children, is looking to expand by buying Scores Sports Bar.

The bar is located right next to the future site of the center's Freedom Blend Coffee House in Des Moines.

"Our plans are to purchase the bar and to knock it down and to build a new structure; a children's center where we can have all of our elementary programming," said Mark Nelson, Executive Director of Freedom for Youth Ministries.

With financial backing from the Lutheran Church of Hope, Nelson hopes to close on the property by the end of the year.

Meanwhile, progress is being made on the Freedom Blend Coffee House. It's going to serve customers as well as the teens that work there. They will earn a paycheck and gain the skills needed to land a job outside the walls of Freedom For Youth.

"We're taking young people and starting with the basics of being punctual and showing up to work on time, being cooperative, respecting authority, treating the customer well, all those soft skills that are so important for any job," Nelson said.

The ministry is seeking volunteers to help finish the project.
