One half of an Iowa viral music duo has passed away.

We had the privilege to follow Marlow and Frances Cowan’s musical love story. Marlow passed away Thursday morning, surrounded by family, at the age of 97.

The couple, who was married nearly 70 years, shared a true love of music. They met while students at Iowa State University and their partnership brought musical joy to thousands over the years.

In a 2004 story with Channel 13, Marlow said, “Music has been the most important thing I think that’s kept us enjoying life, enjoying each other.”

The Cowans performed together well into their 90s and back in 2008 a video of the pair performing a piano duet at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota went viral.

Marlow was well-known for repairing hand bells and making his own musical instruments out of everyday objects.

Our thoughts go out to the Cowan family at this difficult time.
