IOWA CITY, Iowa – Iowa quarterback C.J. Beathard and cornerback Desmond King were named to two preseason college football watch lists on Tuesday.
Beathard, a senior signal-caller who was awarded second-team All-Big Ten honors last season when the Hawkeyes reached the Rose Bowl, is among the 90 players on Maxwell Award watch list. The award, named in honor of Robert “Tiny” Maxwell, is given each year to the nation’s top overall player.
King, also a senior who won the Jim Thorpe Award in 2015 as the nation’s top defensive back, landed on the Bednarik Award watch list and will surely be named to the Jim Thorpe Award watch list when it’s announced on July 11. The Bednarik Award is given each year to the best defensive player in the country.
The Hawkeyes open their 2016 season at home on Sept. 3 against Miami (OH).
