AMES, Iowa -- Cyclone running back Mike Warren was named to the Maxwell Award watch list on Tuesday, which was announced by the Maxwell Football Club.
The award, given each year since 1937 to the country's best player, is named after college football icon Robert "Tiny" Maxwell.
The sophomore is coming off a surprising yet stellar season as he led all NCAA freshman with a total of 1,339 rushing yards, which also ranks third-highest by a freshman in the history of the Big 12 Conference. The 2015 Big 12 Freshman of the Year also set the school record with an average of 5.9 yards per rush.
Iowa State opens their 2016 schedule against in-state rival Northern Iowa on Sept. 3 at home.
