DES MOINES, Iowa -- A Des Moines family says they lost everything after their house went up in flames early Sunday morning.

Firefighters were called to the 2100 block of Washington Avenue just before 4:30 a.m.

When crews arrived, the house was engulfed in flames and took about an hour to get under control.

The homeowner was out of town at the time and heard the news from a family friend.

"I can't even walk into the house, the ceiling inside has completely collapsed from the inside, I can't even get through there," said Barbara Sherrill, who lives in the home. "Even the fire department told me, the nails in the house would go through their boots. How am I even supposed to go in there and salvage anything, which I don't think anything is even left."

The homeowner thinks someone set her home on fire on purpose.

But firefighters say the cause is still under investigation.
