GLENWOOD, Iowa -- A cyclist participating in RAGBRAI was killed after being hit by a pickup truck Sunday morning.

The incident happened around 6:40 a.m. near the town of Glenwood, the starting place of the race.

The Iowa State Patrol says 72-year-old Wayne Ezell of Jacksonville, Florida, was struck from behind by the truck. Both Ezell and the truck were traveling westbound near mile marker two on Highway 34 at the time of the accident.

Ezell was a retired editorial writer for the Florida Times-Union newspaper.

Investigators are still determining if charges will be filed on the driver of the pickup truck.

Ezell's death marks the ninth cyclist killed on Iowa roads this year.

This year was also the first time RAGBRAI held a "Mile of Silence" to remember those who were injured or killed while cycling.

Ragbrai's Director T.J. Juskiewicz took to social media to comment about the accident.
